Tips for drivers with experience outside of BC
1. Turning right (or left onto a one-way street) on a steady red light
After coming to a full stop, you may turn right or turn left onto a one-way street when it is safe to do so. The conflicts in this situation are (for the right turn):
- crossing traffic on your left;
- pedestrians on your right crossing the street;
- oncoming traffic that may be facing a left green arrow.
Also check for signs “No right turn on red light”.
2. Turning right/left on a green arrow
Green arrow means advanced or protected turn, you can proceed when safe. The oncoming traffic and pedestrians are facing a red light. If the green arrow changes yellow, you have to slow down and stop before the intersection, unless you can’t stop in time.
3. Passing a four-way stop intersection
The first vehicle to arrive at the intersection and come to a complete stop should go first. In a situation when two vehicles arrive at the intersection in the same time, first should go the one in the right or the one that is going straight over the one that is turning left.
